Cinco De Mayo Sober Activities

Cinco de Mayo celebrations in America have evolved into major drinking events.  In fact, according to Nielsen Marking Data that track retail sales in all US markets, consumption of alcohol during Cinco de Mayo exceed that of the Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day. As such, this holiday is can present serious problems relevant to binge drinking, alcohol poisoning and drunk driving.  It threatens the sobriety of many people and especially those in alcohol recovery. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican and North American celebration that mark the Mexican defeat of French troops at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Every May 5th, people gather to commemorate this victory.  The Cinco de Mayo spirit has survived and today, has become an even bigger holiday in America than it is in Mexico.  All over the country, people gather to celebrate this day with food and lots and lots of alcohol. Since there is no stopping the flow of liquor at Cinco de Mayo parties, people in recovery need to identify ways to enjoy this holiday without sabotaging their sobriety goals. Some Cinco de Mayo sober activities to consider include:

  • Starting a new sober party tradition.  With so many people battling alcohol use disorders and being a risk to themselves and others from binge drinking, hosting a sober party can turn out to be a lot of fun as well as a life-saving event.
  • Now may be a good time to review your relapse prevention education and training information before heading out for your Cinco de Mayo celebration.  Triggers may be everywhere but if you are prepared, it’s possible that you just be able to help yourself and someone else stay sober by implementing some of the relapse prevention techniques learned in your relapse prevention education and training program.
  • Honor the real meaning of Cinco de Mayo complete with a variety of Mexican food favorites sans alcohol beverages.
  • If you must attend parties where alcohol beverages will be served be sure to take along support such as your sober coach or a loved one or two who are aware of your need to stay sober.
  • If you are caught off guard at an impromptu Cinco de Mayo event and have no way to leave, consider calling someone to pick you up or using a sobriety mobile app to help you find local support.

Although Cinco de Mayo is a time of remembering Mexico’s victory over the French, it should not represent a defeat for those that have already overcome alcohol addiction.  Binge drinking is also a common activity that happen during these events.  As a result, even people that do not have an alcohol use disorder put themselves at risk of suffering the consequences of drinking too much during Cinco de Mayo celebrations.  Keep in mind while celebrating that Cinco de Mayo comes once a year and not a reason to let alcohol ruin your life.
