Every person who is suffering from an addiction to a substance such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana or prescription medication, requires an individually structured treatment program. Another difference in treatment is based on the person’s gender, as men and women often require separate treatment approaches. Gender specific addiction treatment can help maximize the overall success of the patient’s recovery.
Initially, drug treatment was aimed towards men with a substance dependency, which meant that when women would receive treatment, they struggled and felt isolated by the stigma associated with drug addiction. These days, treatment caters to both sexes, which helps make the entire experience more productive and successful, as it is tailored to the individual.
Additionally, drug use and environments are often different between men and women; men are more likely to become addicted overtime, whereas women can develop an addiction rather fast. By understanding the differences that exist, a rehab facility geared towards treatment for both men and women is able to help a wider range of individuals.
Males will often use drugs as a means for escaping social and behavioral issues, as well as to better their mood. Therefore, the traditional structure (the old male-dominated treatment approach) can specifically look at areas of concern for males.
An area that can benefit from a men’s addiction treatment approach is the father-son relationship. It can be strained by an addiction and require mending through treatment. Anger and aggression are also common among male drug users and is specifically targeted by the treatment program; looking at the behavioral triggers and offering alternatives that do not lead to those feelings. Men also tend to be more emotionally withdrawn than women, and therefore, the emotional isolation is dealt with accordingly.
The issues that women face when looking for substance abuse treatment are generally different than what males struggle with. These differences include PTSD as a direct result of sexual or physical abuse, financial constraints, medical related issues such as pregnancy and primary care-giver concerns when children are involved.
Rehab centers that provide women’s addiction treatment programs often offer aid in several areas such as childcare assistance, as well as financial aid programs. The group therapy that women are involved in focuses on giving them a feeling of empowerment and ample support. Oftentimes there is an increased focus on co-existing disorders in the treatment of female patients. Treatment programs commonly focus on creative expression, such as music and art therapy as well.
