10 Marijuana Drug Facts You Should Know

In the last few years, the attitudes and opinions toward marijuana have been changing in the United States. Presently, 23 states allow the use of medical marijuana, and four of them also allow the use of the drug for recreational purposes. What is widely debated and unknown are the long-term physical and psychological effects of cannabis use. As part of Marijuana Awareness Month, advocates from both sides of the marijuana debate focus their attention on reaching out, and educating people about the pros and cons of using this drug. Studies have shown that marijuana can lead to dependence and even addiction. Here are 10 marijuana drug facts you need to know.

  1. Marijuana is the most used illegal substance in the United States, with 42% of Americans trying it at least once, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). According to a study from a monthly journal published by the American Medical Association, marijuana use has increased in the U.S. from 4.1% in 2001-2002 to 9.5% in 2015.
  2. Marijuana is composed of 500 different chemical compounds, and can be consumed in a variety of ways, including through smoking, vaping, through foods, and in oil form.Infographic
  3. The chemical found in the plant that makes users feel high is called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC. In large, concentrated doses, THC can be very dangerous, and has accounted for an increase in emergency room visits in the U.S.
  4. A 2013 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse revealed that children or teens who frequently use cannabis are almost four times more likely to exhibit violent behavior and five times more likely to steal.
  5. Marijuana dependence comes as a result of tolerance buildup. Many marijuana users turn to other drugs to get a faster and stronger high. 16% of all drug treatment center admissions in the United Stated are due to the drug, according to SAMHSA.
  6. Short-term effects of marijuana use: THC makes contact with certain receptors in the brain that can cause the user to experience changes in mood, altered senses, impaired memory, trouble moving the body normally, an altered sense of time, and trouble with thinking clearly and problem-solving.
  7. Long term effects of marijuana use can lead to an impairment of brain development. Especially when teenagers begin to smoke pot, their memory, thinking, and learning abilities may be hindered.
  8. Other health problems related to cannabis use include damage to the heart and lungs, causing breathing problems such as bronchitis, other lung infections, and increased heart rate, which can lead to heart attack in some. Expectant mothers who smoke marijuana during pregnancy can also cause harm to their unborn children. Smoking while pregnant can affect the development of the fetus’ brain, which can lead to developmental delays and trouble with attention, learning, memory, and problem-solving.
  9. Mental health effects have also been linked to marijuana use, including paranoia, links to the worsening of psychosis and schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts among teens.
  10. Marijuana addiction is a possibility. Constant exposure to these chemicals overtime, especially from a young age, can lead to changes in the brain that can cause addiction. An estimated nine percent of users become dependent, but the percentage can reach as high as 25 to 50 in those who use it on a daily basis.
