Crack Addiction Recovery Stories

Conquering an addiction to crack cocaine represents a major breakthrough. This is true, not only for the addict but for their loved ones and others in addiction to this drug that may have lost hope. Addiction to crack has been described as one of the hardest substance addictions to kick.  Some even believe that once addicted you are hooked on this drug for life.  However, innumerable crack addiction recovery stories contradict this premise.

For many recovering addicts like Rob who said in his addiction recovery story he had become a complete and utter slave to his addiction, treatment came as a last resort after incomplete efforts to quit and an attempted suicide had failed. After asking himself “what is there left to do?” Rob finally came to the realization that he could continue to the bitter end of addiction – jail, suffering, death or “find a new way to live” as a quote in the Narcotics Anonymous text suggest. Finding a new way to live for Rob came in the form of a recommitment to the residential treatment process.

For many people with ingrained drug addiction, especially to crack cocaine, long term residential treatment has been shown to be the most effective.  Experts studying the effects of addiction on the brain say “short term fixes do little to break the cycles of addiction.  The reality is that many individuals who do not complete their drug rehab programs or seek the fastest way to achieve recovery experience more difficulty due insufficient attention to the residual effects and trauma of addiction.  Long term residential treatment works because:

  1. Distance from people, places and things that would influence drug use alleviates the stress of temptation to indulge in drug use during the recovery process.
  2. It provides sufficient time for neurological functions, hijacked by addiction, to re-engage.
  3. Sustained abstinence provides the opportunity for more mental clarity in order to focus on the essential elements of recovery without the interruption of periodic lapses into drug use.
  4. Patients have the benefit of ongoing support for a long enough period to create change.
  5. New patterns of behavior have a chance to be established and tested before leaving treatment.

While it is true that not everyone is a candidate for long term residential treatment, ultimately, people in recovery who want to remain that way must exercise vigilance that is akin to the inpatient or long term rehabilitation process.  This includes cultivating an environment that supports sober living and avoiding social environments, individuals or other triggers that threatens it.

Understanding the subtle nuances of recovery is also an important aspect of sobriety maintenance.  Because relapse is such an integral part of addiction, it can take multiple treatments for an individual to achieve a significant shift in motivation that strengthens the resolve to put crack addiction forever in the past.

Whether you have been struggling with crack addiction for months or years, a commitment to long term residential care enhances your chances of achieving full recovery with less setbacks. It may also be interesting to know that there are numerous studies that validate the effectiveness of long term rehab especially for hard to overcome substance addictions such as crack.
