The newest mechanism for fighting addiction is the recounting of drug addiction success stories. Celebrities that have been able to overcome drug addiction are also coming forward to highlight their struggles to attain and sustain sobriety with the hope that it can inspire others to do the same. Stars like Drew Barrymore, Oprah Winfrey and Robert Downy Jr., to name a few, have been candid about their substance abuse experiences. According to their stories and the success they have achieved after and despite their struggles with drugs, help others to see that it is possible to break free from addiction.
In her drug addiction success story titled, “Happiness is Possible” Angela said she finally got tired of being broke, out of dope, homeless, hungry and lost. After hitting bottom and making a decision to do whatever it takes, Angela said “I chased my recovery like I chased my dope”. Today, Angela describes her life as one that is filled with blessings. The turning point of every successful addiction story comes when the desire to live supersedes the compulsion to use drugs. Of course, not everyone is able to reach this pivotal moment entirely on their own.
For some, it is through the direct intervention from loved ones that help them to recognize the impact of addiction and propel them towards change. For others it can be just getting sick and tired of being miserable, as it was for Angela. Still for some, it is through the stories of others that have endured similar experiences that they are able to catch a glimpse of what life can be beyond the obsessive seeking and compulsive use of drugs. No matter what it takes to stir hope in the heart of people lost in addiction, comprehensive drug treatment, care and support can produce the reality of happy and productive lives.
Sometimes it may take more than one effort to overcome addiction as it was for acclaimed actor, director, producer and screenwriter Drew Barrymore. At fourteen years of age, Barrymore had already been through two drug rehab programs for dependency on various drugs. Finally, after her second stint in rehab that lasted for approximately three-months, Barrymore says she has been sober since then. What is important to know, as Robert Downy Jr so cleverly point out in an interview with Oprah Winfrey is that… “It’s not that difficult to overcome these seemingly ghastly problems…what’s hard is to decide to actually do it.” Before making a decision to overcome drug addiction or to “actually do it” it may help to know that:
Drug addiction success stories are helping to bring greater awareness of the disease and the importance of seeking early treatment. Although there are many stories of addiction that end tragically, they still contribute by helping to highlight the dangers inherent in prolonged substance abuse.
