What is in your medicine cabinet? Join Rehab Detox Treatment this Saturday October 22, 2016, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm local time, take your unused, unwanted or outdated medications to a local community collection site to be properly disposed of. You can check www.dea.com to find a local drop off location nearest to you. This will be the 12th National Take Back Day which aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of prescription medication. With the U.S. currently in the middle of a prescription drug epidemic, this year’s National Take Back Day is a critical one.
In the previous 11 National Take-Back events, over the past 6 years, the DEA has collected 6.4 million pounds of prescription drugs and safely disposed of them. That is million pounds of potential medications that have been kept from being poured down a drain, flushed down a toilet or put in the household trash that could have potentially tainted our drinking water supply and pollute our local water ways. It is also millions of prescription drugs that have been kept out of reach from our children, friends, family, and loved ones and lowering risks of accidental overdoses and accidental poisoning of children and pets. The collection and deposing of these medications has also reduced crime by keeping these prescription drugs off of our street for addicts to get ahold of.
“Prescriptions drug abuse has become the nation’s fastest growing drug problem, destroying countless lives.” says Stephen G. Azzam, DEA Special Agent in charge. “DEA’s Take-Back initiative provides another way to address this epidemic and a safe way for our citizens to dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs and reduce the threat they pose to public health and safety.” The spike of heroin overdoses and addiction deaths in the US has grown at an alarming rate and continues to rise. Since 2000, the rate of deaths from drug overdoses has increased 137% and in the U.S. alone more that 15 million people abuse prescription drugs. With event like National Prescription Take Back Day we can try to combat this epidemic but we need the help of every state and every community. So this Saturday join Rehab Detox Treatment in raising awareness and safely disposing of unused and unwanted prescription medications.
