Salvia Rehab

What Is Salvia Rehab?

Salvia divinorum is an herb that can induce a short-live experience similar to psychosis. Due to it being legal in many states, it is often sold online and at various stores. This ready availability along with other factors have led to the rise of both addiction to the drug and subsequently, Salvia rehab centers that help people cope with addiction to the substance.

How Salvia Rehab Programs Help

Due to the lack of research into the long-term effects of salvia abuse, there is not enough evidence to know for sure what the long term effects of the substance can be on the body. However, due to several factors including genetics, environment and frequency of use among other factors, psychological addictions can form.

Salvia addiction rehab treatment programs aim to address the underlying factors in an individual that led them to their drug abuse. A study published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine revealed that memory and learning skills in rodents were heavily affected by the presence of salvinorin A (the main chemical in salvia). Further studies revealed a drastic change in mood. More research may increase the number of known risks in the future.

Treating Mental Dependence

Addiction is a complex brain disorder that has several aspects to effectively treating it. It is categorized by compulsive drug-seeking behavior that continues in spite of negative consequences to the person’s life. Disruption can occur in their professional and home environment and behavior can change as the person stops doing other activities that use to be enjoyed. To treat mental addictions of this nature, several methods of treatment can be used including the following:

  • Multidimensional family therapy – This method is aimed at adolescents and teens that are abusing salvia and it involves the entire family. There are usually relationship problems due to an addiction and this treatment method can treat the patient and the family to help restore normal family function and support.
  • Motivational Interviewing – In this method, therapists capitalize on the patient’s internal motivation for change and to go through rehab.
  • Cognitive- behavioral therapy – The patient is taught to notice problem situations in their life and is given alternative coping methods of dealing with situations such as peer pressure and anxiety in order to avoid drug abuse.
  • Contingency management – With the use of rewards, the patient is encouraged to change their behavior and avoid salvia abuse.

 Why is Treatment Effective?

Ever since the research in the 1970’s revealed that people who go through rehab for substance addiction can be helped to stop drug use, return to their normal lives and avoid drug abuse in the future, principals an effective rehab program have been formed that include the following:

  • Multiple levels of an individual have to be addressed in order for treatment to be successful.
  • The length of the stay in the program is critical to its success; it was found that if a person remains in treatment until the end, there was a high chance that the treatment would be successful over the long-term.
  • Treatment programs have to be readily available for people to join when they need it.
  • Monitoring of the patient and changes to their treatment made based on their progress is important in order to continuously meet their needs.
  • A person does not have to want treatment in order for it to be successful; oftentimes, the addiction causes the person to avoid their problem with substance abuse.

Preventing Future Relapse

Relapse prevention is a crucial part of long-term recovery. People often become addicts due to genetics, environment and because of when they started drug abuse among other things. Therefore, discovering the reason an individual starts to abuse substances can help them to understand the trigger situations and cope with them better. Support groups such as the 12-step program support group can further help to maintain a person’s sobriety.
