Synthetic Marijuana Rehab

spice-rehabSynthetic marijuana, or Spice, is a relatively new product, like many designer drugs, and it is marketed as a “safe” alternative to marijuana. However, in the beginning of 2015 alone, there were more than 1000 reported overdose cases where hospitalization was required. Synthetic marijuana rehab programs have become an essential part of drug treatment due to this alarming trend.

What is the Purpose of Synthetic Marijuana Rehab Programs?

The purpose of synthetic marijuana rehab programs is to help patients with detox and treatment for the addiction and abuse of the harmful drug. Spice is a mixture of various herbal mixtures that can produce a more intense high than marijuana. It is a synthetic cannabinoid which produces mind-altering effects.

Spice is addictive and as a result, usually requires rehab programs in order to effectively break the cycle of addiction. A rehab center can help with the withdrawal symptoms which include the following:

  • Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
  • Profuse sweating
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lack of motivation
  • Depression
  • Psychotic episodes

Furthermore, the psychological addiction can be dealt with through the help of qualified professionals who have dedicated their lives to helping people who suffer from addiction. Mental addiction to synthetic marijuana is especially like when a person has a history of addiction.

How Does Rehab Differ from Synthetic Marijuana Detox Programs?

With home detox programs, there can be risk of complications due to prior medical conditions and it is therefore advised to seek professional help for drugs like Spice.

Rehab facilities can help manage the symptoms that are experienced during detox in a safe environment due the expertise of the clinicians and the medications on hand.  The patient will also be under constant supervision in an inpatient program and the possibility of obtaining drugs in the facility is eliminated. Prior health condition can also be monitored during the detox to avoid complications.

The Principals that Make an Effective Rehab Program

Effective treatment programs share the same principles that are incorporated into their programs. The following are some of the principals to looks for in a synthetic marijuana treatment program:

  • There are many approaches to treating addiction – Not all people can be treated the same way. What may work for one person may not work for another. It is therefore important that a rehab program consider the individual and setting of their addiction in order to find the best program.
  • Treatment deals with multiple levels of the addiction – People who become addicted to drugs often have a high risk of addiction in their history. A rehab program must be able to treat not only the current addiction but the behavior and thinking that led to it.
  • Encourage patients to stay in the program – Completion of a treatment is a crucial part of its success. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows that the highest success is achieved when a patient stays in a program for at least 3 months.
  • Dual Diagnosis treatment is employed where necessary – Many addicts suffer from co-occurring disorders where both an addiction and a mental disorder such as PTSD are present at the same time. Being able to dual diagnose this occurrence is important to the effective treatment of the addiction and to stop it from reoccurring.
  • Continuous monitoring for relapse – When a patient knows that they are being monitored for drug use, it often encourages them to stay away from drug use and continue with the treatment.

The Importance of Relapse Prevention

During treatment, a patient will be made aware of situations that are likely to occur in the future after they leave rehab. This is done to prepare them for the possibility of relapse due to being overwhelmed emotionally or other trigger situations that may occur. The recovering addict will be given ways to deal with the situations as well as be given access to support groups that can be used when the risk of relapse occurs.
