New synthetic drugs are always coming onto the scene as regulations become stricter and people search for cheaper alternatives to get their fix. Even though some designer drugs are sad to be a safer alternative to hardcore street drugs, nothing could be further from the truth. Designer drugs can pose as much of a threat as illegal substances like heroin, cocaine and meth. Designer drug rehab programs are able to assist those that have fallen victim to addiction to these harmful substances.
Designer drugs are substances that are synthetically made to mimic other illegal drugs and are often made from household items. Since the household items used to manufacture some of the drugs such as methamphetamine can be bought legally, people use it as a means to bypass the law and make their drugs.
Designer drug rehab programs are treatments that are available at a rehab center for people who have become addicted to drugs such as Spice, Bath Salts (looks like common bath salts but is not the same), MDMA or Molly, LSD and GHB. They have various levels of addictive properties and can cause more harm than their normal counterparts. For example, there were over 160 people admitted into hospital for Spice overdose in April, 2015 (a drug that mimics marijuana).
Almost all drugs are mentally addictive depending on how often the person uses the substance and there are underlying reasons as to why they abuse the substance, such as for self-medication. To break a mental addiction to designer drugs, treatment methods such as Motivational Incentives, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing is used in group and individual sessions.
It is important for a person recovering from a substance addiction to have support structures in place, and in the absence of sufficient support structures, the support groups and caring staff in rehab programs can be there for that individual.
If a substance is physically addictive, due to the changes that it brings about in the body and brain, then a detox phase is a key part of the rehab treatment the patient will receive. Depending on whether the drug is an opiate, stimulant or depressant, it will be treated differently based on the expected withdrawal symptoms. For example, a common withdrawal symptom from meth abuse is severe depression among other things which can be dealt with by given the patient anti-anxiety medication.
Once the detox is over, meaning that the majority of the severe withdrawal symptoms have passed, then the behavior treatment can begin.
There are several things that make a rehab program effective at treating an addiction to one of the various designer drugs. The following shows what the principals of an effective treatment program are:
